About this event

The Railway Modeller’s Steve Flint – one of the judges on the Great Model Railway Challenge –  joins us live on Zoom.

Please use the registration form to book a place. Priority is for paid up members, but we hope there will be room for guests too.

Steve is of mid-1950s heritage. Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, his father was a steam locomotive fireman and the young family lived across the road from Scarborough loco shed. Railways therefore played a big role in his early life, and of course, like most boys of a similar vintage, he also had a classic Triang-Hornby train set laid out on a board on his bedroom floor.

A chance purchase of the July 1968 Railway Modeller revealed to him what real model railways were all about: a far cry indeed from the oval floor-bound train set. Thoroughly inspired by what he read, he soon persuaded his father to help him cut the 6′ x 4′ train board into a 12′ x 2′ layout foundation. His entry into the world of end-to-end ‘proper’ layouts had begun.

Little did he know to where all that excitement would lead, but forty years later, he took over as editor of the Railway Modeller.

In his up-coming presentation to The Model Railway Club Steve discloses the highs and lows of what he says, “…was a long and convoluted journey…” which fate, rather than ambition, took him, and admits that having a job which embraces one’s passion is not necessarily as indulgent as it might seem!
